A Non-Fisherman's Life
So while Steve's dad and grandfather continued to enjoy the
pleasures of fishing, Steve focused on his studies, and participated
in athletics. He graduated near the top of his class from La Crosse
Central High School, receiving the La Crosse Central Faculty Scholarship
in recognition of his academic achievements (reading those encyclopedias
as a kid really paid off). He excelled at cross country and track
and field, representing his high school in the Wisconsin State Track
Meet during his senior year. He also received an award for perfect
attendance during his entire high school career (he really must
have really liked school).
Steve then attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where
he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with Highest
Honor. He received the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key, which is
awarded to the graduating student with the highest grade point average.
He also participated in track and cross country at the collegiate
level.
After a brief break from school, Steve enrolled in the Graduate
Business program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He earned
a Master of Science in Quantitative Analysis (more math). In recognition
of his excellent grades in the graduate program, Steve was inducted
into Beta Gamma Sigma, the honorary business society. He later earned
a Master of Business Administration in Financial Analysis (he really
loves that math stuff) from UW-Madison. For his efforts in that
program, he was named the Outstanding Business Student in his class.
For the past 25 years, Steve has worked as an economist, research
analyst, and financial analyst in the field of public utility regulation.
For most of his career he has worked for the Wisconsin Public Service
Commission, which is the agency that regulates utilities. He serves
an expert witness in contested case proceedings.
As you can see, after a few unsuccessful fishing adventures in
his youth, Steve stayed away from the water and focused on the books.
Little did he know that those fishing memories that he would have
just as soon forgotten would lead to his publishing an award-winning
book.
